What is a password manager?#

A password manager is a software that stores your usernames and passwords safely, also allowing generation of complex passwords. It only requires the one password for your password manager to view other passwords. Therefore, make sure you have a strong password for your password manager

What is 2-Factor Authentication?#

A security method that requires two different forms of identification to log into an account, so a requirement to verify your identity in addition to using your password to log in. Examples are texting a code to your email or your phone and using an authenticator app.

What is cloud storage?#

Cloud storage is a method of storing data on the “cloud” or internet/server instead of a physical device like a USB drive. Unlike a physical device, you won’t lose your data if your computer breaks or you lose your USB drive. It’s stored securely in the “cloud”, so you can retrieve it any time you log on to a new computer.

What is antivirus software?#

Antivirus software is a program that scans, detects, and removes viruses and other harmful software from your computer. Most antivirus software offer a 1-year subscription and coverage for multiple devices. Some popular and reputable brands are Norton, AVG, and McAfee. You can purchase these at major retailers like Staples, Target, and Walmart.

Bitwarden#

Bitwarden is a free, open-source password manager for iOS and Android devices. Here are the steps to install it.

  1. Download the Bitwarden app from the Google Play store or App Store
  2. Create an account
    1. Enter email address and master password
  3. Add passwords to your Bitwarden Vault (password storage)
    1. Click the + button
    2. Add the website name
    3. Use the password generator or make your own
    4. Add the URL/link
    5. Choose an optional folder
    6. Click save

Google Authenticator#

Google Authenticator is a great app that provides 2-Factor authentication. Here are the steps to install it.

  1. Download the Google Authenticator app from the Google Play store or App Store
  2. Grant the app camera permissions
  3. Add an account like Gmail that supports 2-Factor authentication
  4. Go to settings and find the 2FA setup
  5. Enable 2FA
  6. Choose to scan a QR code
  7. Tap the + button or “Begin setup”
  8. Press “scan a barcode”
  9. Scan the barcode and Google will generate a 6 digit code
  10. Enter the code to complete the setup
