What are automatic system updates?#

It’s a feature on your phone that automatically downloads and installs updates without you having to manually check for them.

Why are automatic system updates important#

They reduce the chances your data can be accessed, leaked, or abused. When there is a bug/flaw in your phone, there will be new updates to patch the bug/flaw. If not patched, someone malicious can exploit the bugs/flaws to read messages or files, access photos or contacts, and spy on you via camera/microphone. Moreover, these updates might be new features that enhance data privacy protection, such as restrictions on what data the apps can access and indicators for camera/microphone usage.

Steps to Turn on Auto System Updates#

1. Open the Settings app and tap General.
2. Tap Software Update.
3. Tap Automatic Updates.
4. Toggle the switch to the right (green) to turn on Automatically Install.
5. Tap the arrow to go back.
6. If your phone is not updated to the most recent: click Update Now.
