3.6 iCloud / Family Services#

iCloud Family Sharing#

What is iCloud Family Sharing and why it raises concerns#

iCloud Family Sharing is a feature that allows up to six people (one organizer and up to five family members) to share certain Apple services, including:

  • App Store purchases
  • Location sharing
  • Screen Time controls

This feature can raise data privacy concerns depending on what is enabled. For example:

  • If location sharing is enabled, all members in the Family Sharing group can see your real-time location.
  • If purchase sharing is enabled, family members may see your purchase records.

Child Accounts and Monitoring#

A Child account is an Apple ID created for someone under the age of 13. These accounts:

  • Must be part of a Family Sharing group
  • Are legally tied to the organizer
  • Are not fully controlled by the child

If your Apple ID is set as a Child account:

  • The organizer can track your real-time location
  • The organizer can control who you can call or message
  • The organizer can reset your Apple ID password, effectively granting full access to your device and iCloud
  • You cannot leave the Family Sharing group on your own

What You Can Do#

Contact Apple Support Directly#

Apple has procedures for handling abusive Family Sharing situations and will not automatically notify the organizer that a report was made.

When contacting Apple Support, clearly explain something like:

“My Apple ID was placed under a Family Sharing child account without my consent, and I am being controlled or monitored.”

Apple may request:

  • Proof of identity (government-issued ID)
  • Proof of age
  • Proof that the account belongs to you

Apple can:

  • Remove the account from Family Sharing
  • Convert it into an adult Apple ID
  • Help recover control even if the organizer resists
  • Create a new Apple ID (only if it is safe)

Warning: Actions Below May Alert the Organizer#

Only proceed if it is safe.

  • Sign out of iCloud on the device

  • Create a new Apple ID using:

    • A new email address
    • A new password
  • Disable:

    • Find My
    • iCloud Backups
    • Location Sharing

Steps to Check Family Sharing Settings#

  1. Open Settings

  2. Tap your name

  3. Tap Family

  4. Review each category:

    • Location Sharing
    • iCloud Storage
    • Purchase Sharing
  5. Disable anything you do not want shared

Steps to Leave Family Sharing#

If your account age is under 13 or Screen Time restrictions are enabled, only the organizer can remove you.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap your name
  3. Tap Family
  4. Select Stop Using Family Sharing

Installed Profiles / Device Management#

What Are Installed Profiles#

An installed profile (configuration profile) applies a predefined set of rules to an iOS device. These are commonly used by:

  • Schools
  • Workplaces
  • Organizations

When installed on a personal device, they can pose serious privacy and security risks.

A profile can:

  • Enforce restrictions (apps, features, screen time)
  • Install VPNs or security certificates
  • Control network traffic
  • Prevent software updates
  • Enable remote control, including locking or wiping the device

If installed without informed consent, profiles can allow remote monitoring or control, often without obvious signs.

Why This Raises Concerns#

  • Profiles do not appear on the home screen
  • Malicious profiles can operate silently
  • Users may not realize their device is being managed
